Sabbath before Sinai

Many people believe that the Sabbath day came into existence only at Mount Sinai when God delivered His law. That is far from truth. We have seen in the study, “The Sanctuary Unlocks the Mystery of Sin”, that the law of God is the very foundation of God’s throne and government in heaven. It is the moral code of conduct for all the intelligent beings in the universe.

The law came in written form to us at Mount Sinai, when God was establishing His holy nation. It is not only the law of the Ten Commandments that came in written form at the time of Moses, but the word of God, the scriptures, too, came in written form Moses’ time. Because there were no written scriptures before Moses’ time can we say the word of God did not exist and was not known to people before that period? God spoke His word to Adam, Enoch, Noah, Abraham, etc. None can deny that. The same way the law of God existed and was known to the people even before Moses’ time.

In fact the Sabbath is mentioned right in the creation week, and was given to the father of the human race!

Genesis 2:2, 3, “And on the seventh day God ended his work which he had made; and he rested on the seventh day from all his work which he had made. And God blessed the seventh day, and sanctified it: because that in it he had rested from all his work which God created and made.”

The word “rested” in the Hebrew is “Shabath”. This was the first gift that God gave our first parents, as recorded in the first book of the Bible. And in the last book of the Bible, we will discover, it will be the last test for the human race!

Even before God gave the written law at Mount Sinai, God’s people were already observing the Sabbath. When God gave manna in the wilderness of forty years He gave them manna for six continuous days, but never on the Sabbath. On the sixth day God gave them double portion for two days.

Exodus 16:26, “Six days ye shall gather it; but on the seventh day, which is the sabbath, in it there shall be none.”

Every Sabbath God worked a miracle with the manna. Whenever the people tried to keep the manna for the next day it stank and bred worms. But on the Sabbath day it never stank or bred worms, week after week, for forty years! (See Exodus 16:24).

Some people still did not believe the word of God and went to collect manna on the Sabbath and God was very upset with them.

Exodus 16:27, “And it came to pass, that there went out some of the people on the seventh day for to gather, and they found none. And the LORD said unto Moses, How long refuse ye to keep my commandments and my laws?”

So the children of Israel knew God’s commandments and law, including the Sabbath day even before God officially declared the law at Mount Sinai and wrote it down! The Sabbath came down the ages from Adam’s time.
