The Sanctuary Unlocks the Mystery of the Holy Spirit

As much as we need the blood of Jesus for our salvation so much we need the anointing of the Holy Spirit as well. The Lord Jesus paid the highest tribute to the working and the ministry of the Holy Spirit in the plan of Salvation, when He said,

Matthew 12:32 “And whosoever speaketh a word against the Son of man, it shall be forgiven him: but whosoever speaketh against the Holy Ghost, it shall not be forgiven him, neither in this world, neither in the world to come.”

The anointing of the Sanctuary

All the three places of the Sanctuary—the court, the holy place and the most holy place were anointed with the oil of anointing. The altar of burnt offering was anointed.

Exodus 40:10, “And thou shalt anoint the altar of the burnt offering, and all his vessels, and sanctify the altar: and it shall be an altar most holy.” The laver was anointed.

Exodus 40:11, “And thou shalt anoint the laver and his foot, and sanctify it.” The holy place and the vessels were anointed.

Exodus 40:9, “And thou shalt take the anointing oil, and anoint the tabernacle, and all that is therein, and shalt hallow it, and all the vessels thereof: and it shall be holy.” The ark in the most holy place was anointed.

Exodus 30:26, “And thou shalt anoint the tabernacle of the congregation therewith, and the ark of the testimony”

The priests were anointed as well.

Exodus 30:30, “And thou shalt anoint Aaron and his sons, and consecrate them, that they may minister unto me in the priest's office.”

What does anointing with oil represent? As the blood in the sanctuary symbolized the blood of the Son of God, the oil in the sanctuary symbolized the presence and the work of the Spirit of God.

When David was anointed king over Israel the prophet Samuel took oil and anointed him. The symbol met reality; and notice whom did the oil signify.

1 Samuel 16:13,  “Then Samuel took the horn of oil, and anointed him in the midst of his brethren: and the Spirit of the LORD came upon David from that day forward”.

Yes the oil of anointing indeed symbolizes the presence and ministry of the Holy Spirit. Remember the 10 virgins in the parable in Matthew 25 and the oil? All the ten virgins had the Holy Spirit to start with. But only five of them still had Him till the end, and the remaining five were emptied of the Holy Spirit and yet were waiting to be saved. Through this parable Jesus was teaching us a few things. But couple of points stand out clear and loud. First, once saved is not forever saved—you could lose the Holy Spirit and therefore lose Salvation as well. Secondly, you could be in a deception of thinking that all is well with your spiritual life, even without the Spirit in you. And you could be in good company, with the ones who have the Holy Spirit and be waiting for the second coming of the Lord with this blessed group.
