Did Sarah show faith or doubt when she laughed?

IN THE BOOK OF HEBREWS (HEBREW 11:11) IT SAYS BECAUSE OF SARAH’S FAITH SHE CONCEIVED. BUT WHEN WE READ THE GENESIS ACCOUNT (GENESIS 18:1-15) WE SEE SHE DOUBTED THE WORD OF GOD AND LAUGHED!  DID SARAH HAVE FAITH OR NOT?

It is true that Sarah laughed when she heard that she, an old lady, past her age of bearing fruit would have a child, the child of promise. The Spirit of God lays the fact before us as to how Sarah first reacted.

Genesis 18:10-15 “And he said, I will certainly return unto thee according to the time of life; and, lo, Sarah thy wife shall have a son. And Sarah heard it in the tent door, which was behind him. Now Abraham and Sarah were old and well stricken in age; and it ceased to be with Sarah after the manner of women. Therefore Sarah laughed within herself, saying, After I am waxed old shall I have pleasure, my lord being old also? And the LORD said unto Abraham, Wherefore did Sarah laugh, saying, Shall I of a surety bear a child, which am old? Is any thing too hard for the LORD? At the time appointed I will return unto thee, according to the time of life, and Sarah shall have a son. Then Sarah denied, saying, I laughed not; for she was afraid. And he said, Nay; but thou didst laugh.”

Sarah explains to us about this laugh after Isaac was born. And notice carefully the reason she gives for the laugh.

Genesis 21:6, 7 “And Sarah said, God hath made me to laugh, so that all that hear will laugh with me. And she said, Who would have said unto Abraham, that Sarah should have given children suck? for I have born him a son in his old age.”

It was not the laugh of doubt but a laugh of joy of a miracle that such a thing could indeed happen! She continued laughing even after the child was born, and all who would hear of this miracle child would laugh with her for joy!

The psalmist wrote about the laughter of rejoicing for the great things God does for His people.

Psalm 126:2 “Then was our mouth filled with laughter, and our tongue with singing: then said they among the heathen, The LORD hath done great things for them. The LORD hath done great things for us; whereof we are glad.”

This was the laughter of Sarah. She indeed did not doubt the promises of God but she marveled that God would do it for her.

This is what the apostle wrote in the New Testament.

Heb 11:11 “Through faith also Sara herself received strength to conceive seed, and was delivered of a child when she was past age, because she judged him faithful who had promised.”

Yes Sarah “judged him faithful who had promised”. Even if initially she was surprised by what God said she did not doubt the promise of God.

And the amazing thing about the great God of the Bible is He loves to cover the faults and weakness of His children and proclaim aloud the little virtues we exhibit! Oh, how opposite are we faulty mortals who love to cover the graces of others and like to highlight their weaknesses instead!

In the New Testament the Lord highlights Rahab’s faith and not her lies that she said! He highlights the patience of Job in the New Testament and does not mention about his questioning God! Oh what a gracious God we serve who loves to wink and forget all our sins and weakness and reward us for the little faith we show!

Listen to the promise of God to all of us who are faulty like most of God’s people were.

Hebrews 8:12 “For I will be merciful to their unrighteousness, and their sins and their iniquities will I remember no more”!
