The Seven Last Statements

The Seven Last Statements

From the pulpit of the cross suspended in the air

He preached His last sermon there

Seven statements full of deep meaning

While for our sins He was dying

He saw the Jews and gentiles mocking

Waging their heads and haughtily talking

He said, “Father forgive them, they know not what they do”

Forgive all, the gentile and the Jew

One thief saw really who He was

The spotless Lamb without flaws

He pleaded for forgiveness before his demise

“I assure you today, you will be with me in paradise”,

He saw Mary, next to John, weeping like none

He said to them, “Behold thy mother”, “Woman, behold thy son”

What caring thoughts for his suffering mother

He never looked at Himself, always cared for the other.

He was left alone in that thick darkness

And the host of evil close did press

He battled it out at Calvary

“My God, My God, why hast thou forsaken me?”

He went to save us at all length

Finally drained of human strength

For you and me the Lamb was cursed

In great dryness He cried, “I thirst”

The great battle was finally won

By God’s only begotten Son

It was a complete victory, nothing diminished

Then the Champion trumpeted, “It is finished”

No one took His life away,

He laid it down for all that day.

“Father, into thine hands I commend my spirit”

He opened heaven’s treasure for us to inherit.
